Under the Radar Prospects #3 - Echedry Vargas

Echedry Vargas
2022 International Free Agent Signing - Texas Rangers
Current Team: Jupiter Hammerheads
Echedry Vargas was signed by the Texas Rangers during the 2022 International Free Agent signing period out of the Dominican Republic. At the time Echedry was only 16 years old. Though he turned 17 about a month later. He did not stay in the Dominican very long, Echedry made his stateside debut with the ACL Rangers in 2023. He played one game with the Down East Wood Ducks in 2023 before playing the entire 2024 season with them.
2024 was Echedry’s first year in full-season baseball, he batted .276 with 24 doubles and 14 home runs. He earned Carolina League Player of the Week on August 4, 2024. On December 11, 2024 Echedry was acquired by the Miami Marlins along with Max Acosta and Brayan Mendoza for Jake Burger.
2025 was a period of adjustment for Echedry Vargas. He played 82 games for the Beloit Sky Carp in the Midwest League. He batted a meager .201 and only hit 7 home runs. He was also moved to third base, a position he did not play too often in prior seasons.
Echedry spent the entire 2026 season with the Jupiter Hammerheads. The work he put in during the offseason paid off. Echedry had a very strong rebound year. He raised his average 122 points, almost hit four times the home runs and two times the doubles. He played 103 games and batted .323 while hitting 23 doubles and 27 home runs.
Echedry Vargas now holds the Jupiter Hammerheads single season record for home runs. On August 26, 2026 Echedry hit his 25th home run of the year to surpass Marcell Ozuna’s 2012 season total. Echedry’s 27th and final home run of the regular season came on September 2nd.
During the month of August he posted a .386 average, hit 11 home runs and drove in 30 runs. All while posting a 1.303 OPS in 22 games. Because of his performance, Echedry was named Florida State League Player of the Month for August 2026.
In 2026 Echedry Vargas led the Florida State League in six major offensive stats.
Batting Average: .323 - 1st
Hits: 121 - 1st
Home Runs: 27 - 1st
Runs Batted In: 94 - 1st
Slugging Percentage: .611 - 1st
OPS: .983 - 1st
He was also in the top 10 with 23 doubles. This put him tied for 7th with Richard Ramirez, Pittsburgh Pirates and Juan Sanchez, Toronto Blue Jays.
Since coming to the Marlins, Echedry has made a transition away from the shortstop position. This could be due in large part to Top Prospects like Aiva Arquette (No. 2) and Starlyn Caba (No. 7) as Miami’s top shortstop prospects. In 2026 Echedry played all infield positions. He split most of his time between first base and third base.
Echedry is not a big guy, he is 5’ 11” and 170 pounds. This is considered small for a first baseman, so third base seems like a more logical choice. However, he has a .922 career fielding percentage at third base. This is where the prospect needs to put in work to improve, unless the Marlins decide to keep him at first base.
Echedry Vargas is not currently ranked on the MLB Top 30 list for the Miami Marlins. This should change with the off season re-rankings. His performance in the Florida State League this season could put him in the 16-18 range on the prospect list. This would be a right around his rank of 18 on the 2024 post-season prospect list.
Postseason Update: In the 2026 Florida State League Division Series with the Jupiter Hammerheads, Echedry Vargas went 5 for 9 with 2 home runs to help defeat the Dayton Beach Tortugas. The Hammerheads will take on the Tampa Tarpons in the Championship Series beginning on September 13th.
