2024 Topps Big League
2024 Topps Big League has arrived. This is the second year of the revamped format and this year's set packs a bigger punch with an even better rookie class than 2023. Big League also includes the first pack issued cards of the best off-season free agent signings and trades.
The 310 card set includes five different tiers of collecting. There is the base set, or common tier: cards 1-200. Next is the Uncommon Rainbow Foil: cards 201-250. Card numbers 251-275 comprise the Rare Blue Foil. Super Rare Reds follows with cards 276-300. Rounding off the set is the Legendary Gold: cards 301-310.
Here is a breakdown of the pack odds for the different tiers:
Uncommon Rainbow Foil (#201-250): 1 in every pack
Rare Blue Foil (#251-275): 1 in 18 packs, or 1 in a hobby box
Super Rare Red Foil (#276-300): 1 in 91 packs, or 1 in 6 hobby boxes
Legendary Gold (#301-310): 1 in 361 packs, or 1 in 21 hobby boxes
As you can see the level of difficulty for building the 310 card set is quite high.
There are four basic insert types that can be found in Big League. Good Vibrations has 43 cards and can be found 1 in 4 packs. 26 Mascots are featured in their own insert set that can be found 1 in 6 packs. Topps Big Leaguer is a 30 card insert set that falls 1 in every 5 packs. Finally, To the Moon is a die-cut insert set with 48 cards that can be found 1 in 3 packs. There are other more rare insert sets such as Game Day Drip (1 in 1,838 packs) and The Bigs! (1 in 6,464 packs), but these are extremely difficult pulls.
While there are no guaranteed hits in a Big League hobby box, autographs are randomly inserted. There are two primary autograph sets in this year’s release. Opening Act Autographs focuses on rookie autographs. These autograph can be found 1 in every 4 boxes. In this set you will find most of the big rookies like Elly de la Cruz, Jasson Dominguez and Evan Carter. You will also find fan favorite rookies such as Lawrence Butler (Athletics) and Connor Phillips (Reds).
Big League Autographs focus on second year players or veterans. These cards fall 1 in every 8 boxes on average. Corbin Carroll, Julio Rodriguez and Corey Seager can be found in this insert set. According to the pack odds listed on Topps’ website, each of these base autographs have a print run of 3,000 cards.
While this low-end set is geared towards kids and set collectors, there are many interesting aspects of this set. Big League includes the first pack-inserted base cards of Juan Soto in a Yankees uniform and Shohei Ohtani in a Dodgers uniform. The first rookie card of Yoshinobu Yamamoto can be found in these packs.
Big League utilizes a different rookie checklist than Topps Series 1. There are the usual rookies that we will find all year long: Elly de la Cruz, Jasson Dominguez, Evan Carter. There are many rookies on this checklist that did not have cards in Series 1. Presumably these players could show up in Series 2 later this Summer. Aside from the aforementioned Yamamoto, such rookies include Wade Meckler (Giants), Alex Speas (Rangers) and Heston Kjerstad (Orioles).
Hobby Boxes for 2024 Topps Big League will run on average close to $50. In a hobby box you will find 18 packs with 8 cards per pack. This will total 144 cards on average. There are no guaranteed hits in the box. Autographs tend to fall 1 in every 4 hobby boxes. Each pack will contain one Uncommon Rainbow Foil card (Tier 2). On average, every box will contain a Rare Blue Foil card (Tier 3).
